Topics like multiple universes, how time is completely relative, proprioception and why music gets stuck in your head are examined in a critical yet surprisingly understandable way. This stuff really wets my intellectual whistle, check it out!

As a superhero geek, if there’s one movie out there that I’m biting my fingernails about, it’s WATCHMEN. You don’t have to be a fanboy to know that the project’s had all kinds of trouble, mostly centering around the source material’s creator, Alan Moore, distancing himself entirely from the project.

That being said, Zack Snyder’s put together a pretty awesome trailer, even if it tells you absolutely nothing about the movie’s plot. If anything, it’s an extended montage of shots taken directly from the graphic novel, which is certainly reassuring, but not necessarily the linchpin to convincing me that it’s going to be a great movie.

While we wait for the next trailer to hit, take a look at this remix I threw together. A couple years ago, my friend Cameron read Watchmen and wrote a song inspired by the Dr. Manhattan Mars scene. I decided to sync up his song with the new trailer, and it actually works out pretty well.

Now that’s how you make a superhero movie! I just got back from seeing the new Marvel Studios release, IRON MAN, and was literally blown away. Sure, I’m the exact demographic they’re targeting this release to (male, early 20’s, geek) — but I’ve been incredibly disappointed with the recent breed of superhero films.

The problem is they’ve saturated the market. For every good one we get, there’s usually a slew of three or four crappy ones to follow. So as excited as I am for these releases, I usually expect the worst.

Well, IRON MAN was a different sort of movie. It was fast, exciting, funny, action-packed, and wildly entertaining. Pretty much the epitome of what you want a summer blockbuster to be. As much as I’m excited about THE DARK KNIGHT, it’s a little too cynical and brooding to be a popcorn movie.

What impressed me the most was the snappy dialogue. It felt fresh, unrehearsed, and kept the movie going at the pace it needed to keep the audience on our toes. That’s why it wasn’t too big of a surprise when I found out that much of the script was improvised on set. I was happy to see that Favreau’s roots as a comedic writer were carried over to a big budget picture like this, because ultimately, it’s what made the movie so successful.

We cared about these seemingly ridiculous comic book characters because of the improvised moments. When Tony quips with the military officers about MySpace and gang signs, it makes him relatable. But it’s not just the improvised aspect that made us like Tony Stark: Robert Downey Jr. owned the role, and made a chauvinistic douchebag with questionable morals into a likable character the audience rooted for 100% through his performance. It’s hard to think that there could ever be any other choice for the role.

The rest of the cast rounded out nicely, as well: Jeff Bridges was awesome to see in a villainous role (complete with your classic supervillain-pattern baldness and an evil beard!), Gwyneth Paltrow held down the fort as the sort-of-love-interest (and I usually am not a huge fan), not to mention Terence Howard doing way less than he should (although I hear this is all set up for the inevitable sequel…). Overall, the film was one hell of a ride, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I may have some moral qualms with the depiction of middle easterners, but as a pure popcorn flick, I would recommend it without hesitation to anyone who enjoys having fun.

This has been floating around the internet quite a bit today, so I thought I’d throw it up here as well. This is a side by side comparison of the trailers for the upcoming Dark Knight Batman film and the 1989 Tim Burton Batman. They are suspiciously similar. What does this mean? Was one influenced by the other? Is it an homage? Is it simply that trailers are formulaic? I know what Jack Nicholson would say.

Take a look at the side-by-side comparison below:

Any ideas? Maybe the Riddler knows the answer.

UPDATE: The 1989 Batman trailer above is a fraud. It is a fan-made trailer recut to match the Dark Knight trailer. Check out the real 1989 Batman here.

I thought that the objective of vegetarianism and veganism was to ween people off of their addiction to meat, not to feed it in more synthetic and unnatural ways. One of the biggest selling points of an animal-free diet is its health and ecological benefits, the belief that the return to a more natural way of life will free us from the heart disease, diabetes, and cancers that are plaguing our nation.

So could someone please explain to me why PETA is offering $1 million to the first person that can produce in vitro chicken? I guess I could understand a meat eater wanting to eat something like that, but I don’t know any vegans that would want to eat something grown in a petri dish, especially if it felt, smelt, and tasted like real meat and was originally derived from chicken stem cells.

Even if in vitro meat would theoretically be more healthy and environmentally friendly than actual meat, I do not think it’s the answer we are looking for. If you would like to make an actual difference in your health and ecosystem without making drastic changes to your diet, I would simply suggest trying to eat organic and local foods. No lab required.
