PETA offers up $1,000,000 for fake flesh

I thought that the objective of vegetarianism and veganism was to ween people off of their addiction to meat, not to feed it in more synthetic and unnatural ways. One of the biggest selling points of an animal-free diet is its health and ecological benefits, the belief that the return to a more natural way of life will free us from the heart disease, diabetes, and cancers that are plaguing our nation.

So could someone please explain to me why PETA is offering $1 million to the first person that can produce in vitro chicken? I guess I could understand a meat eater wanting to eat something like that, but I don’t know any vegans that would want to eat something grown in a petri dish, especially if it felt, smelt, and tasted like real meat and was originally derived from chicken stem cells.

Even if in vitro meat would theoretically be more healthy and environmentally friendly than actual meat, I do not think it’s the answer we are looking for. If you would like to make an actual difference in your health and ecosystem without making drastic changes to your diet, I would simply suggest trying to eat organic and local foods. No lab required.
