Holy Editorial Coincidence, Batman!

May 1st, 2008

This has been floating around the internet quite a bit today, so I thought I’d throw it up here as well.  This is a side by side comparison of the trailers for the upcoming Dark Knight Batman film and the 1989 Tim Burton Batman.  They are suspiciously similar.  What does this mean?  Was one influenced by the other? Is it an homage? Is it simply that trailers are formulaic?  I know what Jack Nicholson would say.

Take a look at the side-by-side comparison below:

Any ideas? Maybe the Riddler knows the answer.

UPDATE: The 1989 Batman trailer above is a fraud.  It is a fan-made trailer recut to match the Dark Knight trailer.  Check out the real 1989 Batman here.

Sheep Calls

April 25th, 2008

Telephonic SheepCheck out this incredibly cool installation by Jean-Luc Cornec entitled Telefonschafe [Telephone Sheep].  It’s been hard to track down any information about the piece, but as far as I can tell it was installed in 2005 in a museum in Frankfurt.

If androids did dream of electric sheep, I think this is what they’d look like.

PETA offers up $1,000,000 for fake flesh

April 24th, 2008

I thought that the objective of vegetarianism and veganism was to ween people off of their addiction to meat, not to feed it in more synthetic and unnatural ways. One of the biggest selling points of an animal-free diet is its health and ecological benefits, the belief that the return to a more natural way of life will free us from the heart disease, diabetes, and cancers that are plaguing our nation.

So could someone please explain to me why PETA is offering $1 million to the first person that can produce in vitro chicken? I guess I could understand a meat eater wanting to eat something like that, but I don’t know any vegans that would want to eat something grown in a petri dish, especially if it felt, smelt, and tasted like real meat and was originally derived from chicken stem cells.

Even if in vitro meat would theoretically be more healthy and environmentally friendly than actual meat, I do not think it’s the answer we are looking for. If you would like to make an actual difference in your health and ecosystem without making drastic changes to your diet, I would simply suggest trying to eat organic and local foods. No lab required.

Jimmy Fallon to replace Conan O’Brien?

April 24th, 2008

Rumors have been circulating for a while now about who is going to take over “Late Night” when Conan O’Brien takes over the “Tonight Show” next year.  I’d say that this article in The Hollywood Reporter is about as official as anything so far:

After months of speculation, Jimmy Fallon has sealed a deal to succeed “Late Night” host Conan O’Brien on NBC in 2009, sources said.

O’Brien, whose show airs at 12:35 a.m., is moving into the 11:35 p.m. slot next year after “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno’s retirement, which was announced in 2004.

NBC is expected to make the announcement May 12 during its upfront event in New York.

It’s been expected that Lorne Michaels (whose company, Broadway Video, produces “Late Night”) would pull from the pool of SNL alums to head the show, the same way he did with former head writer O’Brien.  My bid would have been Seth Meyers, who can dance talent circles around Fallon, but I guess they need him over on SNL.

Muxtape perfects the digital mixtape

April 24th, 2008

A new service I’ve been really digging lately is Muxtape, a project from artist/webdesigner Justin Ouelette. Muxtape is a free service that allows users to upload a digital mixtape, comprised of up to 12 mp3s. Once made, you can send your muxtape link around to friends. It’ll pop up on their screen as a beautifully simple web page.

Check out the sweet morning music muxtape I just made!

Share your favorite muxtapes in the comments below!

Note: Unfortunately, muxtape only accepts mp3s, so the m4a files from your iTunes won’t cut it.

The Riddler SINGS!

April 24th, 2008

This is the holy grail of late-night internet findings

While google image searching The Riddler so I could composite his body with the head of a fish, I found out that Frank Gorshin (master impressionist/The Riddler) had a brief stint as a singer.

But wait, it gets better: not only did he release a double-sided record, but one of the songs is performed AS The Riddler!

Turn your dreams into a reality and give it a listen:

**Note: I really had to stop myself from starting this post with, “Riddle me this?”

Leo’s Song: Cool hand drawn animation
